What is sensory play?

When I was a youngster I would spend hours in the garden making mud pies for my dollies. It was great fun, I was never a girly girl and didn’t mind a bit of dirt. I’d dig the soil from the ground using my hands finding the odd worm and add some water, then get my hands in there and give it a good mix. I’d then go inside and my mum would go crazy because I’d be covered in mud, It was so much fun though, I loved it. What I didn’t know at the time was this was sensory play, I was learning about the world around me using all of my five senses ( yes occasionally I would try and eat the mud pie).

Now I’m a mum I encourage lots of sensory play in the house. My little one loves to feel, taste, smell, see and hear. It doesn’t have to take a lot of your time and it doesn’t have to cost any money. Even little things like putting a little spice such as nutmeg on your hand and letting your little one smell it whilst your cooking dinner or letting them get stuck in to their food using their hand is all sensory play. Over the coming weeks I will be showing you some easy sensory play activities you can do with your little ones at home.
